What is counselling?
Counselling is a time set by you and the counsellor to look at what has brought you to therapy. This might include events in your past, present, or even in the future. The Counsellor helps you unpack the feelings and emotions in order to help you find a solution to these problems, or to help you discover a way of coping with them. Counsellors should not tell you what to do or what choices to make.
The most important part of the counselling is the relationship between you and the counsellor. While it is natural to feel nervous at the beginning of your first appointment, you should feel able to trust the counsellor and feel safe within the counselling room. You need to be able to feel comfortable to explore feelings, thoughts and behaviours at a deep level if needed and to feel safe enough to talk about whatever you need to.
People go to therapy for many reasons such as relationships problems, stress at work, grief and loss, or simply to figure out who they are, and learn to live life to the fullest. Some people may be experiencing a crisis in their lives or may want to explore how they relate to the world around them and discover more about themselves.
