Turn On The Tap
October 5th 2008
When the decision was made to take up the Samaritan's Purse challenge to walk four miles for their Turn on the Tap challenge after our Harvest Celebration on 5th October, I didn't imagine that the taps would literally be turned on. However, I do believe that God has a sense of humour, and he most certainly must have had a good laugh as a group of 30 hardy St. Chadders took up the challenge to walk four miles - 7 laps of the cricket pitch field in Saint Chad's Park - in absolutely pouring rain.
The purpose of the challenge was to walk the equivalent of what many women and children walk to fetch water in Africa. After they have walked four miles and collected, in most cases, dirty and disease ridden water, they then have to walk four miles back. We continued with the challenge, despite the weather, as we felt that they would not wait to see what the weather was like before they walked for water.
Turn on the Tap is a project which is raising money to provide water filters for families in Africa, so that they can have clean and healthy water. £40 buys one water filter for a family and provides clean water for 25 years - good value for money, I'm sure you will agree! At the moment, we do not know how much money we have raised, but watch this space, we will be letting you know.
Many thanks to all those who took part, some carrying buckets of water, and to Pete Wells who fed and watered us on our return.
